Lubricant = base oil + thickener + additives, base oil is the main component of grease, thickener functions like a sponge, lubrication is the base oil. During use, the condition of the grease should be noted and any oil leakage should be dealt with promptly. The loss of base oil makes the grease unable to provide sufficient lubrication protection and the equipment is prone to wear. The main causes of grease loss during use are chemical, physical and impurities.
Chemical causes: Due to the effect of heat on the friction lubrication part and surrounding gases, the base oil and thickener are oxidised, resulting in damage to the soap structure of the grease, softening and loss during use. Therefore, it is important to check the environment around the grease use to see if it is close to a heat source and if there are any specific chemicals causing the grease to be affected.
Subject to shear: due to the work of the friction parts, the grease is constantly subjected to shear stress, causing damage to the soap structure and softening and loss.
Impurity causes: wear debris from the wear process of the parts, these metal powders can accelerate the oxidation of the grease to generate organic acids, which can destroy the grease failure.
Incorrect ground network: grease can not meet the current operating conditions, in the selection of grease, not only to consider the requirements of the equipment specification, but also to consider the local minimum temperature, maximum temperature, equipment operating temperature, load, speed, size, whether there is water, environmental dirt and other actual conditions, the correct choice of grease.
Grease contamination: Grease is contaminated by water or other impurities, especially the mixing of grease. Avoid mixing grease when using, and when the oil is replaced, pay attention to cleaning the old oil.
Environmental factors: The environment in which the lubricated parts are located and the contact medium have a great influence on the performance of the grease. Therefore, careful consideration should be given to grease selection. In the case of wet or easy contact with water, the choice of sodium-based grease is not suitable, and even lithium-based grease should not be chosen. Sodium-based greases have poor water resistance and tend to dilute and emulsify when exposed to water.
In some parts, lithium grease cannot meet the requirements, for example, the bearings of vertical pumps can be considered to be frequently immersed in water, and lithium grease also has the advantage of short service life and easy damage to the bearings. These parts should be selected with good water resistance complex aluminium-based grease or urea-based grease.
